UNOPS and Japan continue to strengthen the operational capacity of the Lebanese Armed Forces’ health facilities in Lebanon

- Beirut, March 24, 2025—Representatives from the Embassy of Japan, the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), and UNOPS convened to mark the completion of the project that provided energy-efficient solutions and critical medical equipment to three LAF health facilities and to launch a new project in support of the LAF.

With USD 1 million in funding from the Government of Japan, UNOPS installed solar hybrid photovoltaic (PV) systems and energy-saving solutions in two LAF medical dispensaries in Mount Lebanon governorate. Additionally, critically needed medical equipment was delivered to Ain Ebel Military Hospital in Nabatieh Governorate.
The “Urgent Support to Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) through Enhancement of Health Services and Critical Operations in Lebanon” project aimed to strengthen LAF’s operational capacity in providing more than 100,000 LAF personnel, retirees and their families with access to healthcare.
Mr. Masayuki Magoshi, Ambassador of Japan to Lebanon, said: “Through our continued commitment to supporting the healthcare sector in Lebanon, Japan decided to contribute to the advancement of LAF’s critical medical facilitiesLAF through UNOPS. This assistance is driven by the urgent need to support essential healthcare services provided to military service members against the backdrop of socio-economic hardships and mounting security threats. Japan stands firm in its dedication to support the recovery of Lebanon’s vital institutions as well as the role of the Lebanese Army in safeguarding the security and unity of Lebanon.”
Brigadier General Eng. Tony Abboud, representing LAF’s Commander General Rodolph Haykal, said: “Japan's support for the Lebanese Army and people presents an exemplary model of true friendship and solidarity. The support initiatives included equipment and training, which have contributed to enhancing the military institutions' readiness and strengthening its ability to carry out its missions, positively impacting the security of our nation.“

Building on the successful completion of this project, the Government of Japan and UNOPS announced the inauguration of a new USD 1.5 million project to further support LAF through the provision of renewable energy solutions and medical equipment, and the renovation of a medical equipment warehouse.
The projects intend to contribute to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
