• BEIRUT, June 20, 2023 – Families in Lebanon are barely able to meet their most basic needs despite cutting down drastically on expenses according to a new survey by UNICEF. A growing number of families are having to resort to sending their children – some as young as six years old - to work in a desperate effort to survive the socio-economic crisis engulfing the country.

UN-Habitat, ESCWA, and UNICEF gather Lebanese Ministries of Environment and Agriculture with local authorities and project partners to discuss water-related climate adaptation measures in Lebanon.

• Beirut, 1 June 2023 – In the context of the “Resilient Water Solutions Against Climate Change in Jordan and Lebanon” project, led by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the second national Steering Committee meeting in Lebanon has concluded, gathering Lebanese Minister of Environment Nasser Yassine and Lebanese Minister of Agriculture Abbas Al Hajj Hassan along with local authorities, implementing partners and other relevant stakeholders. Participants discussed the project’s milestones, challenges and the way forward.

• Beirut, 22 June 2023 -- The European Union (EU) has allocated 3.7 million euros to fund 2CIRCULAR, a project implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in partnership with the Ministries of Industry, Economy & Trade, Environment, and Finance and in cooperation with the Association of the Lebanese Industrialists (ALI) and the Federation of the Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (FCCIAL).

• Beirut, 7 July 2023 --  Under the patronage of the Lebanese Minister of Environment, Dr. Nasser Yassin, and in the presence of the German Ambassador to Lebanon, H.E. Andreas Kindl; and, the United Nations Deputy Special Coordinator, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, Imran Riza, in addition to representatives from the public sector, UN agencies, NGOs, and media – UN-Habitat launched today the “Reducing Marine Litter in the Mediterranean through Waste Wise Cities Lebanon” project, also known as “ReMaL.”

• Beirut, 10 July 2023 – In line with its efforts to support local authorities in maintaining basic services within the current crisis context, with the generous financial support of the European Union, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in partnership with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities (MoIM) and the Urban Community Al-Fayhaa, inaugurated the newly rehabilitated fire brigade building. This is an important step towards enhancing community safety for over 450,000 residents across the four cities of the union, including Tripoli, Al-Mina, Al-Beddawi, and Qalamoun.

• Beirut, 13 July 2023: As part of its vision to advance sustainable urban development across Lebanese cities, UN-Habitat today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lebanese non-governmental organization Rebirth Beirut, to further support the city of Beirut’s urban recovery and sustainable development. The signing was held at Rebirth Beirut’s offices in Gemmayze and attended by Ms. Taina Christiansen, Head of the UN-Habitat Lebanon Country Programme and Mr. Gaby Fernaine, Founder and President of Rebirth Beirut.

• Beirut, July 25, 2023 – The Government of Japan and UNOPS launched a project in support of the critical public facilities in Lebanon. The project responds to the energy crisis in Lebanon through the provision of renewable energy and energy saving solutions to public hospitals and water pumping stations in Nabatieh and Bekaa governorates.
