UN inaugurates municipal finance solutions to tackle financial challenges amidst the current Lebanese crisis
  • Beirut, 10 August 2023 – In line with its efforts to assist local authorities in addressing current socio-economic challenges, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities (MoIM) and with the generous funding from the EU, launched the implementation of financial and administrative solutions for selected municipalities and unions of municipalities in Lebanon. This marks an important step towards improving accountability, transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness at municipal level.

UNICEF remains committed to children’s right to education in Lebanon and urges national investment to ensure livable wages for teachers and education staff to guarantee uninterrupted learning for all children
  • Beirut, 16 August 2023 – The 2022-23 scholastic year was marked by learning disruptions for more than 2 months affecting over 450,000 children (Kindergarten – Grade 12). UNICEF commends all teachers and educational staff as well as parents and students for the collective effort of finishing the academic year and completing the official exams, under the leadership of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE), and the support of international partners under the new aid modality, the Transition and Resilience Education Fund (TREF).

On World Humanitarian Day, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Lebanon honors five local organizations for their humanitarian work
  • Beirut, 18 August 2023 - Under the patronage of H.E. President of the Council of Ministers, Mr. Najib Mikati, and on behalf of the humanitarian community in Lebanon, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, Mr. Imran Riza, and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Lebanon organized an honoring ceremony celebrating the World Humanitarian Day (WHD).The event was held in the Movenpick Hotel in Beirut in presence of the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Saade Chami, the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Firas Abiad, and a distinguished assembly of representatives from ministries, embassies, UN agencies, NGOs, and media.
