BEIRUT, 26 January 2024

I recently visited southern areas of Lebanon to meet with persons affected by the ongoing hostilities. I spoke to both people who had left their homes and are now displaced and those who, despite the risks, are staying.  It is clear that all are facing immense challenges.

• Beirut,  06 February 2024 - The Embassy of Japan in Lebanon and UNOPS announced the signing of a project in support of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).

• Beirut, 31 January 2024 – Lebanon’s unrelenting and overlapping crises are forcing a growing number of families to send their children to work in a desperate effort to survive the socio-economic crisis engulfing the country. Following the increase in the number of street and working children in Beirut, UNICEF, the Beirut municipality, public institutions and civil society organizations are collaborating through a local action plan to empower and protect street and working children through standardized and complementary programs.

• 13 February 2024, Beirut - The Embassy of Italy in Beirut, through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), is supporting UNICEF’s school rehabilitation programme to create a more conducive learning environment for students and teachers in Lebanon, with a focus on the most vulnerable communities.

Initiatives in Africa, Latin America, the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia cited as best practices for reversing ecosystems degradation

• 13/02/2024, Rome/Nairobi – The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have named seven initiatives from Africa, Latin America, the Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia as UN World Restoration Flagships. These initiatives include ecosystems at the tipping point of outright degradation resulting from wildfires, drought, deforestation, and pollution. They are now eligible for technical and financial UN support.

• Beirut, February 14, 2024 – Funded by the German government through KfW Development Bank, the second round of UNOPS calls for proposals is now open. UNOPS is seeking proposals from local officially registered non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, foundations and academic institutions to assist in the operational management and maintenance of Karantina Garden & Jesuit Garden for two years.

• Beirut, 13 February 2023 – The Lebanese government has officially launched its National Social Protection Strategy. This marks a significant milestone in Lebanon's ongoing recovery efforts and a first step towards comprehensive social reform.
